The Board of Directors of United Way of Erie County consists of many diverse people. The Board Members volunteer their time, energy and resources to oversee the organization.

Arriving in Sandusky in 2006, Maris Brenner directed the Sales and Conference Services Department at Kalahari Resort opening the 90,000 sq. ft. Conference Center and serving on the resort's Executive Committee. With the expansion to 225,000 sq. ft in 2012, Maris began a new role as Director of Community and Industry Relations. She retired from Kalahari in June 2016. Her first involvement with United Way was working on the Duck Derby fund raiser as early as 2006 and then each spring, which led to joining the UWEC PR Committee and the Community Investment Committee. In January of 2012, Maris became a UWEC Board Member. She also served as President of Lake Erie Shores and Islands Visitor and Convention Bureau, Past President of Sandusky Rotary Club, and is an active Board Member with the Erie County Chamber of Commerce, Huron Chamber of Commerce, and the Ohio Travel Association.

John Lane grew up in Northeast Ohio and graduated from Hudson High School in Hudson, OH. During high school, John earned a Congressional appointment to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He graduated from West Point as a Distinguished Honor Graduate in 1994 and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Over the next eight and a half years, John served as an Army Aviation Pilot and Leader in various postings around the world to include: Fort Rucker, AL, Fort Campbell, KY, Soto Cano Airbase, Honduras and Headquarters, United States Army Europe in Heidelberg, Germany.

Mark Bravo is currently employed by UPS in Milan as the Operations Supervisor. Mark has been employed by UPS for over 15 years. He has experience in logistics, planning, cost containment, and operations. Mark graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio and continued his education at John Carroll University where he studied French and Economics. Mark has served on United Way Allocations Committee for over four years as al at-large-committee member.

David Clark currently serves as a board member of the United Way of Erie County Board of Directors and has served on the Board since March, 2010. Dave also serves on the PR Committee and assists with City of Huron Division of the Campaign.

Retired - Past United Way of Erie County Executive Director
Jack Haplea served as the campaign chairman, board member and board president before becoming Executive Director for the United Way of Erie County from 1987 and retired in 2007. He and his wife, Barbara, have lived in Huron since 1967. Over the years, he has participated on many non profit boards including Sandusky Area YMCA, Kinship, LEADS, Humane Society of Erie County, Sandusky Main Street, Sandusky Jaycees, Erie County Chamber of Commerce and Sandusky Rotary. He has also been involved in numerous fundraising events including the Haunted House, Follies, Lamplighter Ball, Coachlight Ball, Great Grape Stomp, and Duck Derby to name a few. He currently is a member of the Sandusky Bicentennial celebration committee. He attended Western Reserve University in 1963 and after graduation served two years in Bogota, Colombia with the Peace Corps. He has taken graduate courses in Public Management Science at the Weatherhead School of Management and Mandel School of Non Profit Management at Case Western Reserve earning associate’s degrees in both programs.

Tom Kinsel was born and raised in Pennsylvania and located to Ohio in 1979. Tom retired from Perkins Schools after serving as a teacher from 1979-1997 and 2004-2014. He served as the Director of Technology from 1997-2005. During his time at Perkins, Tom was also employed as the Athletic Trainer, the Middle School Athletic Director, the Computer Department Chair, the Social Studies and Model United Nations Adviser, Mentor Teacher and served on many educational leadership committees. Tom has been an active member of Zion Lutheran Church for over 30 years and has served and assisted in many areas during the years. Tom is married to Nancy, also a retired teacher from Perkins Schools, and they have three children.

Peter and his wife of 25 years, Marsha live in Perkins Township and have two sons, Shepard and Garrett. Mr. Kowalski is Vice President of the Mack Iron Works Company and has been with Mack Iron since October of 1983. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. Peter has been a member of the United Way of Erie County Board of Directors since 2001. He is the Chairperson of the Governance Committee of Sandusky Central Catholic School (SCCS), has served on the SCCS Board of Directors for seven years, including five years as the Board’s President and is involved in ministry committees of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sandusky. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Sandusky, the Leadership Erie County Curriculum Committee, The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Erie County, and the LEADS Alumni Association. He is past Chairman of the Erie County Human Resources Association, past President of the Sandusky Chapter of the International Management Council, served on the Board of Trustees of the Sandusky YMCA and also Perkins School district’s FACTS Advisory Committee. He holds professional memberships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Welding Society (AWS), the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and the Sandusky Area Safety Council (SASC).
Connie Roberts is the Marketing Manager for the Beacon. Previously, Connie was employed as the Marketing Director for Bassets Market for five years and the General Manager for Mon Ami for 5 years. Connie has been a member of the Huron community for 20+ years. Connie serves on the PR and Campaign Committee.

Carole Romp currently serves as a board member of the United Way of Erie County Board of Directors and has served on the Board since April, 2007. Carole serves on the Business and Operations Committee.

Karen Russell is a supervisor for Firelands Counseling and Recovery Center. She serves on the Allocations Committee.

Brad Wieber was born and raised in Sandusky and graduated from Perkins High School. He attended Ashland University and earned a BSBA with a major in hotel/restaurant management. He move to Missouri in 2007 to work for Hilton Hotels. He returned to the area in 2011 to work at Kalahari Resorts and in 2013, he began his career with Great Wolf Lodge. Brad attends Grace Episcopal Church and is a very active member.

Jan Smith Wood is the Rector at Grace Episcopal Church. She originally served as Priest-In-Charge when she arrived in Sandusky in 2011. Jan serves as an Ex-Officio Board Member for Kinship. She is also a trainer for Safeguarding God's Children. Jan graduated with a BA from the University of California and obtained a Masters of Divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific.
